For all DSLR camera users might know about certain spec that will help you to find better version of each camera. But for those who hard to find out about which is better on Nikon D3100 VS D5100. On this article you may find the answer and help you to be more carefully before purchase one of both models. Nikon D3100 is sat under D5100 which is D5100 is an update for Nikon D5000. Nikon D5100 has come with better technology of sensor and more features than D3100. But both cameras have the same processor of new Expeed II that enables users to process the video up to 1080p and faster images. Here the details of differences between Nikon D3100 VS D5100:
  1. On this number, the sensor of both cameras becomes a significant difference among them. Nikon D3100 has 23.1 x 15.4mm sensor 14.2 megapixels and it is larger sensor for D5100 which has 16.1 megapixel 23.6 x 15.6mm sensors. The sensor of D5100 is as same as the sensor in superb DSLR Nikon D7000. 
  2. Sensor of Nikon D5100 has wider range of ISO which is from ISO 100-6400, it means that the camera can promote to ISO 25600. Different with D5100, Nikon D3100 sensor is lower than Nikon D5100 which is only ISO 100 to 6400.
  3. The range of Nikon D5100 is better than Nikon D3100 because Nikon D5100 has better dynamic.
  4. Nikon D3100 can only record in RAW twice lower than Nikon D5100 (12-bit VS 14bit).
  5. Nikon D5100 is in the level of upper entry then Nikon D3100 is in the level of DSLR entry-level.
  6. In the feature of Expeed II processor, to record any audio, Nikon D5100 has an external microphone jack and this series also allows you to control exposure of semi-manual, then in Nikon D3100 have no control of exposure and only capable to only 1920x1080p of full HD at 24 fps.
  7. Nikon D3100 cannot allow you to bracket frames like Nikon D5100 which enables you to bracket up to three frames.
  8. More D-Lightings options has offered for Nikon D5100 it allows you to choose between high, auto, extra high, off and low, and normal, but not in Nikon D3100, you only able to toggle between off and on.
  9. Nikon d3100 is less with special effects and scene modes than Nikon D5100.
  10. Different with Nikon D5100, Nikon D3100 doesn’t have in-camera HDR feature.
  11. Nikon d5100 is heavier than D3100.
  12. Nikon d5100 able to shoot 4 FPS, but D3100 only can shoot 3 FPS.
  13. The size of Nikon D5100 is bigger than D3100.
  14. The only one similarity between both cameras is doesn’t have motor’s focus.
